Inclusive playground on the way for McMillan Elementary
McMillan Elementary is the proud recipient of the Rick Hansen Foundation’s Access4All Barrier Buster grant. This grant was received through the combined efforts of The Rick Hansen Foundation Access4All Canada 150 Signature Initiative and the Government of Canada. With its Access4All Barrier Buster grant, McMillan Elementary will be able to build a universally accessible, sustainable, and inclusive outdoor space.
The Rick Hansen Foundation presented McMillan Elementary with a $30,000 cheque at an afternoon assembly on Thursday, February 16th. Students gathered together to also learn more about the Rick Hansen Foundation and why inclusive play is important.
“Our beliefs at McMillan revolve around a T.E.A.M. approach – together everyone achieves more,” noted Principal Angela Wiebe. “The addition of this equipment on our playground will allow our students of all ages and all abilities the opportunity to play and socialize together. We are very excited and thank our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) for all of the hard work that was put into the grant application process.”
The new playground equipment will include a glider with a ramp that allows interactive play through imagination, movement and side-by-side stimulation. The glider features ample room for two wheelchair passengers, as well as twin bench seating to accommodate peers, friends or family. The addition to the current playground will address the needs of all children with both visible and invisible disabilities as well as the entire community as a whole, stated the Rick Hansen Foundation’s website.
This play structure will be the first of its kind in Abbotsford, setting the example for the entire community and creating change and awareness for the future. “McMillan will serve as an inspiration and point of pride for schools across Canada,” said Lison Daubigeon of the Rick Hansen Foundation, as she spoke to students and staff at Thursday’s assembly.
Construction on the new playground is set to begin over the summer months, with a targeted deadline of September 2017.
