Weather & Emergencies
During the late fall and winter months, inclement weather conditions might cause a school or schools to shut down. The Superintendent of Schools has authority, on behalf of the Board, to temporarily close a school or schools. A number of factors go into this decision, including: student safety, the conditions of roads near schools, school grounds, school bus routes, and whether facilities are fully operational.
The decision to close a school is made in a timely manner, as circumstances allow. Details and updates are always distributed via the below platforms; please connect with us online.

In the event of an emergency procedure, schools can be placed under one of four ‘emergency actions’ or statuses (effective as of September 8, 2015) to ensure the security and safety of students and employees:
- Drop, Cover and Hold
- Shelter in Place
Information regarding each level of emergency status is listed in our Administrative Procedure 103 - Emergency Procedures. These actions are put into place by either a school administrator (Principal, Vice-Principal, or if neither available, the Teacher-in-Charge), Assistant Superintendent or the Superintendent. Procedures are practiced at each school at multiple times through the year. In all scenarios, special considerations are to be taken by teachers and supervisors for the care and evacuation of students with special needs.
In the same manner as Winter Weather procedures, notifications of emergency status will be posted on the District website, social media platforms and individual school websites.
